THE DYNAMICS OF PRINT: EXPLORING THE INTERACTIVITY OF STATIC MEDIA

In recent years much attention has been paid to the ways that digital technologies are impacting our lives. The potential of social networking, innovative web and mobile design, and changes in communication have altered how we define “interactive.”

Amid this flurry of creativity, print technologies have often been singled out as slow, old-fashioned, low-tech and static. In the right context these labels are not completely undeserved; however, it is often the case that the dynamic and interactive characteristics of print media are overlooked in favor of those of the web. This exhibit explores those aspects of print design that are interactive in ways similar to and beyond digital technologies. There is the physicality of cranking a letterpress carriage; the aesthetic consideration of how a third color is created in overprinting two inks; and the historical and contemporary experience of a book.

The print versus digital debate is practically moot at this point. Nobody really disputes the direction that human expression is going. In reality, it’s not one side against the other. Each medium has its own unique capabilities, and this is an opportunity to see what is similar and to ask why it is similar.

The Dynamics of Print was a senior BFA exhibition by Adriana Torres. For five days the show was installed in the B-Gallery at Western Washington University. The artwork and design included was meant to entice the viewer to interact with print objects, and the show received unexpected participation.
